The new administration has promised to remove all undocumented immigrants (approximately 11 million people) through mass deportations. We know that when he was president in 2016, he was only able to deport 1.5 million, falling short of his predecessor Obama, who deported 3 million, while Biden left a balance of 2.8 million deported.

How are they going to deport 11 million people?

This has been the question in immigrant rights groups, and it has also been one of the most common questions in general.

In all forums, the voices of the experts are clear, “We don’t know.”

The fact is that deportations are a complex process, the due process of law, this administration must carry these deportations under federal, constitutional laws and follow the process implemented by the different agencies involved in these actions, ICE CBP and local agencies. So, how do they intend to do it?

In the following lines I will try to shed light on this question.

Expanding the notion of criminality

Laken Raley Act: In recent days, the House of Representatives has approved this legislation, which basically expands the notion of deportability of immigrants. Now is in the Senate of the Republic.

Traditionally, any person is innocent until proven guilty.

Through this legislation and as it was passed by the Senate, any person who is accused of a minor crime must have their immigration status verified and placed in deportation proceedings.

A minor crime such as not paying for a banana at the store, and you don't have to steal the banana, just because you are accused (even under false accusations), your immigration status may be required. The police will be in charge of checking the immigration status of each person who is accused of a minor crime. I doubt they are going to be checking everybody’s immigration status, only “mexicanos”.

Only Hispanics are asked, where are you from? Or where are your parents from? I have never seen this question asked of a Euro-descendant. That is why when Police is who is asking, they are racial profiling people.

Legalizing racial profiling as a deportation tool.

On January 7 2025 in Bakersfield, California, the border patrol carried out checkpoints, raids and even chases in the fields.

The border patrol carried out different operations that day, which were reported by social media users. CBP in addition to bringing cars with their logos, also had cars that were not marked.

Most of the reports of this raid were made by the migrants themselves on their Tik Tok platform.

One of these improvised reporters was arrested with his crew of workers, it was the last video he uploaded for that week.

A woman in one of the fields in California was alerting the local community, “be very careful because the immigration police got into la mandarina” referring to the tangerine harvest fields in California.

At a gas station, a local newscast reported that CBP were stopping people outside the store. “Witnesses report that when they were stopped, the agents threw their food in the trash and put them in the trucks.”

The owner of the business, even though he is a legal resident, said he was afraid of deportations. He believes that what they did to his clients, mostly farm workers, is unfair. It is not right that they were detained, when they were going to pick up their breakfast before going to harvest the fields.

Another user of Tik-Tok reported that the border patrol slashed the tires of his truck, even though he is a legal resident, and even threatened him to be accused of transporting undocumented immigrants.

In all the cases, in which people were questioned and detained or released, they had something in common: their skin color, their appearance, they were Latino and/or they drove a construction work truck.

How did it affect the local economy?

The day after the raids in Bakersfield, a popular Hispanic market, where the community does their shopping every day, was deserted, there were no people shopping and many workers did not show up for work.

The fields were empty. Construction sites were empty of workers, Home Depot where several workers were taken away, there is only the abandoned cars of the people that the border patrol took away.

Schools were empty out of fear.

Fact or fiction?

There are rumors in California, of people escaping the fire, who saw how immigration was detaining immigrants who were escaping the fire. I could not verify this comment, but I know that something similar happened during the pandemic under Trump. When, on national television, it was reported that ICE chased an ambulance that was taking an immigrant to the emergency room.

spreading fake news in the media

In recent days, Facebook announced that they will stop fact checking the content on its platform.

We know that the reputation of the X platform collapsed and it has lost followers since it was bought by billionaire X.

The owner of Amazon removed a cartoon from the New York Times newspaper, this act of censorship caused the departure of the creator of the cartoon and the Government of Mexico has denounced the lies of this newspaper, on more than one occasion.

It seems that we now have an idea of what the next 4 years will be like for Hispanics in the USA. Racial harassment, violation of human rights and fake news.

For the moment, enjoy the food produced and prepared by the hands of migrant workers, but don’t close your eyes to the suffering of their families, many of whom are American citizens.

I really appreciate the depth and scope of your analysis. Here in Athens, we must work in solidarity with Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition leading the way—beyond “progressive” handwringing to coconspirator action.
